Big Milestones for Khadija

Khadija and Nicole were first matched through the partnership with the English Skills Learning Center (ESLC) and Hser Ner Moo Community Center. Khadija began attending classes at Hser Ner Moo and the teachers soon realized that she would benefit from one-on-one instruction. The two now meet twice a week through the ESLC. Nicole went through 12 hours of training with the ESLC and stays in contact with her mentor for teaching advice and support as she explores teaching an emergent reader. As part of the ESLC, a staff member visits her class to help with materials and support.

Since January, Khadija’s skills and confidence have flourished! When first presented with the numbers and counting dominoes, she thought that the words “one” and “two” were assigned to those specific objects. She now understands the concept of those numbers and can count beans with ease as shown in the photo. She has also learned to say her name, where she is from and is currently studying the days of the week. Additionally, she has begun to trace her name! Khadija is a dedicated student and Nicole is patient and always well prepared. We are so excited to see the progress that they are making together through the partnership of the ELSC and Hser Ner Moo Community Center.
